Research Assistant

This position provides support for research on plant breeding and genetics of Popcorn Seed. 

Responsibilities include preparation for and execution of experiments, including planting, growing plants in the field, propagating plants in preparation for field trials, planting the field trials in the spring, collecting data in the field, making crosses, processing seed, maintaining inventories, and harvesting seed. The work will be conducted in the field, laboratory and office. 

  • Perform all tasks associated with the year-round production of high quality seed which may include:
    • Taking notes and collecting data.
    • Popping of product.
    • Record and analyze popping data.
  • Ensure that all work is performed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with experiment instructions, research protocols, company policies, and regulations.
  • Communicate regularly and openly with the team and supervisors about workflow and experiment status, especially when there are questions or problems.
  • Help produce and use maps, labels, envelopes, row tags, sample tags and selection tags for plants.
  • Participate in protocol development and process improvement programs (safety, efficiency, effectiveness).
  • Promote positive work attitudes and harmonious relations.
 
Requirements:
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and the ability to learn new technology to help capture data through computers and other mobile devices.
Basic mathematical skills.
Ability and willingness to work outdoors and indoors in hot, cold, dry, and wet environmental conditions
