About the Role

Zangger Popcorn Hybrids is seeking a Field Research Technician II to join our Research & Development team in support of our popcorn breeding and seed production programs.  


This hands-on, field-based position supports all aspects of our breeding program, including field trials, nursery operations, pollinations, data collection, seed processing, laboratory testing, inventory management, and harvest activities. 


The ideal candidate will be an experienced, self-directed professional capable of working independently after receiving direction from the Research Team Lead. Although not a supervisory position, this role helps coordinate daily research activities, provides guidance to seasonal employees, and serves as a trusted operational resource within the department.

 

 

Primary Responsibilities

       Execute field and laboratory research activities supporting popcorn breeding and seed production.

       Assist with field trials, nursery operations, planting, pollinations, data collection, harvest, seed processing, popping evaluations, and inventory management.

       Prepare and maintain research records, maps, labels, tags, samples, and related documentation.

       Coordinate daily work activities as directed by the Research Team Lead and help guide seasonal or part-time employees.

       Complete assigned work independently while communicating progress, issues, and resource needs.

       Follow research protocols, safety procedures, and quality standards.

       Support a safe, organized, efficient, and collaborative R&D work environment.

Qualifications

       Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Science, Agriculture, Biology, or related field preferred.

       Two or more years of relevant agricultural, field research, seed production, or crop science experience preferred.

       Experience with field trials, plant breeding support, research plots, or seed handling strongly preferred.

       Dependable schedule availability and willingness to perform both varied field work and repetitive seasonal research tasks with consistency and accuracy. 

       Demonstrated initiative, independence, reliability, and follow-through.

       Strong organization, attention to detail, and communication skills.

       Basic computer skills and willingness to learn research/data collection systems.

       Valid driver’s license required.

Physical & Working Conditions

       Ability to work indoors and outdoors in variable weather conditions.

       Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform repetitive physical work.

       Willingness to work extended seasonal hours during planting, pollination, and harvest.
