Early 20th Century Ord by Ord High School Football and the Ord Golf Club with Vintage Cars

Come out to revisit history and watch the Ord High football team practice for their next game on Monday, October 20 at 4 pm at Dane Creek Golf Course!  The Ord Golf Club and Valley Rods Unlimited will team up to reenact the 1920s-1940s with vintage cars lining Hole #1 fairway as the football team holds practice on what was its first football field. From 1915 to 1948, local fans would come out to support their football team by lining the football field with their Model T Fords to enjoy a great day of football with family and friends. After the 1949 season, the football field was moved to its current location at the east end of Bussell Park.

In June 1915 Joe Barta and CJ Mortensen met with the Ord Park Board with the idea to build a golf course for citizens to enjoy on what was then an alfalfa field. In July 1915 Charles Johnston of Omaha completed the design work for the golf course incorporating the creeks, thickets, brambles and natural lay-of-the-land in the design.  All labor used in building the course was donated by member volunteers.  Completed in 1915, the Ord Golf Club (now Dane Creek Golf Course) is a 9-hole, 2390 yard, par 33/36 municipal golf course that has undergone many changes through the years.  Originally sand greens, this city park course hosted the 1959 Men’s and 1962 Ladies Nebraska Sand Greens Tournaments.  The course was upgraded to grass greens in 1964.  From 1915-1948 the course used the original design for play.

In the original design, the golf course was set up differently than it is now.  What is now Hole #9 was originally Hole #7 and the Hole #8 tee box sat just north of the Hole #7 sand green.  Golfers used bridges and stairs to reach the #8 sand green located up where the current parking lot now sits.  Hole #9 tee box was located where the current practice green now sits.  Hole #9 sand green was located where the furthest east cart shed now sits.  The old clubhouse was located on the cement slab in Bussell Park just north of the current city machine storage shed.
